The surrender of Apache leader Geronimo's army on September 4, 1886, marked a decisive end to the long Apache Wars. He surrendered along with his tribe after a large-scale military campaign involving thousands of Western and Mexican soldiers, during which the U.S. Army held overwhelming technological and numerical superiority. The surrender resulted in Geronimo and his companions enduring long imprisonment and great suffering. They were forced to relocate from their original lands to remote areas, where they faced years of disease and hunger. This officially ended Apache resistance and brought a long chapter of opposition to American westward expansion to a close.
