Lebanon: Aoun approves amnesty law
Lebanon has ceased implementing the general amnesty law signed by President Joseph Aoun. This law includes amnesty for crimes committed before March 1, 2026, and reduces penalties for certain offenses, with exceptions for murders, corruption, espionage, and sexual assaults. The law aims to address the judicial backlog and prison crisis by dropping cases and penalties and shortening detention periods, but it does not cover crimes of treason, terrorism, forgery, or major financial crimes. The leader of the Free Patriotic Movement, Gebran Bassil, announced that he will file a legal challenge against the law, amid ongoing disagreements over the categories of beneficiaries and the law's impact on justice.
