The Democratic Republic of the Congo has faced significant difficulties in containing the Ebola virus outbreak in the eastern part of the country. The spread of the disease has expanded from 3 regions to 60 regions since mid-May, with approximately 6,250 cases and 3,039 deaths recorded. The challenge is compounded by weak community systems for case tracking, difficulties in tracing contacts, and a lack of health resources—particularly in security-compromised areas like Ituri Province—which contributes to the ongoing transmission of the virus. Additionally, unsafe burial practices and limited communication with local populations increase the risk of infection spread, with the potential number of contacts rising to as many as 97,600 people, although less than 20% of these are currently being tracked. Healthcare facilities are overwhelmed and lack sufficient laboratory testing capacity, hindering efforts to control the outbreak. Healthcare workers are also experiencing increasing fatigue, and threats of violence jeopardize safe burial operations.
