Record heatwave fuels Sydney fires
Sydney experienced a severe spring heatwave, with temperatures reaching 33°C, which is about 13 degrees above the normal average. This has increased the risk of wildfires and prompted authorities to impose a ban on campfires. These conditions come amid forecasts of the strongest "El Niño" phenomenon in decades, which will make the weather drier and hotter in southern Australia from September to November, raising the likelihood of large fires.
