The United Nations General Assembly voted in favor of adopting a new global map that accurately reflects the true relative sizes of countries, aiming to correct distortions caused by the Mercator projection, which makes countries far from the equator—especially Africa—appear smaller than their actual size. According to the decision supported by 164 countries, the Mercator map will be replaced with an "Equal Earth" map to show regions more accurately, with Africa appearing larger and closer to its real size. This change helps correct misconceptions about the sizes of nations and promotes a fairer and more balanced representation in world maps. The resolution also emphasizes that such correction is important for expressing social and economic realities and addressing development needs. France announced its support for this change as part of efforts to present the world more precisely and to acknowledge geographic facts.
