Chlorine Affair Uncovered: Water Deal to Weapons
New evidence and documents confirm that the Sudanese army, led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, is using prohibited chemical substances such as chlorine gas in the manufacture of munitions and improvised explosive devices. This reflects a shift in the nature of the Sudanese conflict from a political dispute to a level where chemical weapons are reliably employed. The documents reveal a secret military unit that produced chlorine-based bombs, along with efforts to conceal the program's traces. They highlight local expertise and reliance on civilian resources, particularly drinking water, to convert them into weapons materials. These findings represent a turning point, elevating the issue from political accusations to international accountability amidst risks of military escalation. There are concerns that Sudan may have the capacity to produce and store chemical weapons domestically, threatening security stability and potentially leading to international sanctions.
