Reasons migrants in Germany avoid traditional parties
A study by the German Center for Integration and Migration Research confirms that voters of immigrant origins tend to steer clear of traditional German parties, especially the Alternative for Germany (AfD), which faces significant rejection from this group. As the number of voters with migrant backgrounds in Germany increases—reaching 12% of the total electorate in 2023—the majority of these voters favor the Social Democratic Party, despite a decline in their support among younger generations. Conversely, the AfD employs strategies aimed at convincing and mobilizing voters of Turkish and North African origins, exploiting feelings of frustration and fear. The party also seeks to create divisions between longtime and newer migrants in order to strengthen its electoral position in the future.
