New Laws Affecting Living in Japan
Japan has been gradually moving toward reducing its openness to immigrants, as the government announced significant increases in visa fees, including paying 20 times more to obtain permanent residence, along with stricter requirements such as demonstrating a higher income, having a retirement fund covering 30 years, and possessing intermediate-level Japanese language skills. These measures come amid a sharp decline in the birth rate (which reached 1.14 in 2023), a labor shortage, and increasing demand for foreign workers—although new restrictions may curb the influx of such workers. These policies are raising concerns among foreign residents and conflicting with Japan's efforts to address its demographic crisis and strengthen its workforce.
