The article discusses the trilateral military maneuvers "Edge of Freedom," which are set to commence between South Korea, the United States, and Japan in September 2026. The aim is to strengthen security cooperation to counter North Korea's nuclear and missile threats. The exercises will focus on missile defense, air defense, and anti-submarine warfare. They are considered routine and defensive in nature, with an additional intention to deter China. This move comes as part of a reaffirmation of the alliance between Washington and Seoul, especially after the U.S. scaled back its joint drills with South Korea in 2023, which escalated tensions with Pyongyang, viewed as a threat. The exercises also coincide with South Korea's efforts to explore sending forces to enhance security in the Strait of Hormuz amid ongoing tensions between Washington and Tehran, in an attempt to bolster military relations with allies and demonstrate commitment to the alliance despite recent disagreements.
