Jobs data revives interest rate debate

American labor market reports showed that the number of jobs added in August significantly exceeded expectations, reaching 162,000 jobs compared to an anticipated 56,000. This boost was driven by a large return of workers to the labor force and an increase in the participation rate to 61.6%. Despite the strength of the data, Federal Reserve officials see the 3.1% wage growth as not adding inflationary pressures, making the decision to raise interest rates dependent on upcoming inflation data. The Federal Open Market Committee's September meeting is expected to be balanced, with the possibility that the bank will raise rates if inflation accelerates—especially as bond yields have reached their highest levels in two decades.
