Congress Approves Sanctions on Putin and Iran
Despite opposition from some Democrats, the U.S. House of Representatives approved the "Lindsey Graham Act" of 2026, which imposes broad sanctions on Russia and Iran and grants President Donald Trump additional powers to impose tariffs of up to 100% on the largest buyers of Russian oil and gas, in an effort to reduce Moscow's revenues and fund its war in Ukraine. The bill also includes sanctions on Russian President Vladimir Putin, Russian officials and businessmen, as well as targeting Iran's energy and arms sectors, with the possibility of suspending sanctions with the President’s approval. The law comes as part of efforts to strengthen U.S. sanctions against Moscow and Tehran, representing a significant development in U.S. sanctions policy.
