The Israeli army confirmed that a member of Hamas crossed the Erez border crossing during an attack on October 7, 2023. This resulted in the killing of Sharif Shadi Ibrahim Labdu, who was a member of an elite force within the movement, in a recent raid in northern Gaza. The army also killed the commander of another elite force, Youssef Saad al-Din Rashad Zain, during an operation in the same area. The army explained that the militants who were killed were engaging in attacks against Israeli forces and civilians and were attempting to restore Hamas's capabilities in violation of the ceasefire. They were eliminated to remove the threat they posed.
