The French-Algerian writer Boualem Sansal has once again sparked controversy after expressing his complete rejection of the presidential pardon he received in Algeria a year ago. He articulated his desire to be retried in his home country, despite being prohibited from returning there. The Algiers court sentenced him to five years in prison on charges related to undermining national unity, charges which Sansal denies. He is now calling for a new trial with international observers present to ensure legal fairness. Additionally, he expressed his displeasure with the pardon, which was issued at the request of Germans and French, and threatened to pursue international legal action against the Algerian authorities. He insisted that the charges against him are based on prior statements he made about the relationship between western Algerian regions and Morocco. Sansal faces legal obstacles, including the suspension of his passport and the absence of an official decision to revoke his citizenship, which hinder his efforts to request a new trial. Meanwhile, he continues to publish books that include statements about his detention and legal circumstances.
