The United Nations Mission in Libya faced criticism after intervening in the implementation of death sentences by the Benghazi authorities for convicted terrorists. The authorities in eastern Libya announced that they had carried out more than 30 executions in recent weeks. Despite calls from the mission to halt executions and review the cases, the executions continued, raising human rights concerns. It is worth noting that ISIS controlled the cities of Derna and Sirte from 2014 until they were expelled in 2018, amid deteriorating security conditions and increasing violence and brutality against civilians. Human rights organizations and the Libyan government condemned the executions, emphasizing the importance of fair trials and the protection of human rights. Meanwhile, the UN mission reaffirmed the responsibility of Libyan authorities to protect citizens' rights and deliver justice while avoiding human rights violations.
