Fear Limits Brazil Election Coverage
An independent news site in the Amazon, Brazil, has decided not to cover the upcoming general elections scheduled for October 4, due to repeated threats and attacks against its team. These incidents include tire punctures, threats involving a decapitated cat's head, and warning messages written elsewhere. The threats have intensified since the 2022 elections, when the site's team experienced harassment scenes believed to be linked to their coverage of environmental issues, Indigenous rights, and land disputes in the region. The site explained that its decision was driven by concern for the safety of journalists and their families, considering that these threats are now endangering press freedom and the public’s right to access information. Nevertheless, the site stated it will continue to focus on environmental issues and Indigenous rights in the Amazon.
