Syria Hezbollah Security Talks via Turkey
Secret negotiations mediated by Turkey between Hezbollah and the Syrian government aimed to de-escalate tensions between the two parties. Hezbollah provided guarantees of non-intervention militarily in Syria or support for the regime's former groups, while the Syrian side assured no military intervention in Lebanon and pledged to disarm Hezbollah. The second meeting took place in Turkey in September 2023, focusing on security issues, arms smuggling, and dormant regime cells. Both sides emphasized that there is no hostility between them and Syria reaffirmed its non-intervention in Lebanon. Iran's support for Hezbollah, the group's main backer, was absent from the meetings, impacting the mediation's outcomes. The gathering was held with the goal of reducing tensions and reaching security understandings between the two sides.
