Aviation Security Post-September 11: Emergency Cabin Door Access
After the Fly Dubai incident, questions are renewed regarding the nature and strength of safety measures in the cockpit, which since 2001 have been transformed into bulletproof and explosion-resistant fortresses, preventing any unauthorized attempt to enter during the flight. International regulations, especially Appendix VI of the Chicago Convention, mandate the design of doors resistant to projectiles and explosions, emphasizing that only the crew has the right to enter and exit the cockpit. These regulations also specify strict procedures to prevent unauthorized access. The modern digital systems include controls such as automatic locking and emergency codes, ensuring that doors can only be opened with crew authorization. Additionally, protocols are in place to handle extreme emergency situations, making it impossible for anyone unauthorized to access the cockpit during the flight.
