US withdrawal from Iraq compared to Afghanistan
The American forces completely withdrew from Iraq, in a move that reflects the political desire to end years of military intervention. The withdrawal was carried out in two phases: the first in 2011 and the second in 2026. Although the withdrawal aimed to reduce economic and human costs, its repercussions were significant, as the security vacuum in Iraq allowed the emergence of ISIS and its control over large areas in 2014, which led the United States to return to Iraq to combat the organization. The article also clarified that the withdrawal highlights future challenges, as Iraq continues to face armed groups supported by Iran and needs political and security stability to strengthen national sovereignty. American strategic interests in the region remain intact, focusing on preventing escalation, especially amid ongoing regional tensions.
