The state of Tennessee in the United States faced widespread criticism after the failed execution of condemned inmate Krista Pyle. She was rushed to the hospital on a ventilator after ingesting two doses of pentobarbital, a drug typically used in executions. Pyle, 50 years old, survived a botched execution attempt in May 2023 due to difficulty drawing blood, which led to a suspension of executions in the state and an independent review of the circumstances. These events resulted in the resignation of the head of the Department of Corrections and the temporary halt of all executions, with officials reaffirming that procedures were carried out according to protocol. However, reports suggest that issues with the intravenous injection tubes may have contributed to the failure. This marks the second failed execution in Tennessee within a year, and the United States has recorded fewer than 20 female executions since 1976.
