Bolsonaro and Lula in runoff
Brazilian Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, the right-wing candidate, received a high percentage of votes in the first round of the presidential elections, securing around 47%, surpassing expectations based on polls. He is scheduled to face former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who gained 44.9% of the votes, in the runoff on October 25. Concerns remain over rising living costs, corruption, and security issues. The main debates focused on economic matters, with scandals involving corruption and allegations of foreign interference. The likelihood of a right-wing candidate supporting free-market policies winning has increased, which could impact Brazil’s policies and international relations, especially amid growing political and economic divisions in the country.
