Algeria's Chief of Staff departure shifts power
The director of the Algerian Presidential Office, Boualem Boualem, who was one of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune's closest allies, has passed away due to a serious illness at a hospital in Geneva, Switzerland. Boualem, born in 1952 and having held important positions in the state since the 1990s, has been serving as the Director of the Office since late 2019. He was considered the mastermind behind many strategic decisions and sensitive legal files. His lengthy absence has sparked speculation about a potential succession, with Ibrahim Morad, the State Minister in charge of overseeing state affairs and local governments, emerging as the leading candidate for the position due to his extensive experience and broad connections within the ruling circles. It is also likely that Morad will be appointed as Algeria’s ambassador to France, amid strained relations between the two countries—a position currently vacant. The future of the succession remains contingent on Boualem’s health developments and Morad’s role in the upcoming phase.
