Libyan HoR presidency disputes intensify
The conflict within the Libyan House of Representatives has escalated over the legitimacy of its leadership, as 98 out of 102 deputies approved an informal session’s amendment ending Aguila Saleh’s term as speaker after one year, paving the way for the election of a new leadership body. This move aims to end his continuous tenure since 2014. Saleh rejected these measures, describing the session as illegal, and canceled a scheduled meeting, while his deputies affirmed its legitimacy. This rivalry opens the door to forming a new leadership for the Council, amidst growing disagreements among members regarding legitimacy and authority, with warnings of ongoing tension and potential overreach by constitutional institutions.
