France confronts student protests
France is experiencing widespread protests in high schools and surrounding areas, with between 266,000 and 450,000 protesters taking to the streets against deteriorating educational conditions, government policies, and socio-economic challenges. Hundreds of educational institutions have been closed, and classes shifted to remote learning. The demands include students' rights to food, housing, and education, with calls for a popular movement to become "May 68 of the 21st century." Authorities have detained 488 individuals, and the use of sound grenades has been suspended after a teenager was injured. There is a divergence of opinions among protesters—some calling for peaceful change, others resorting to some acts of violence—while school administrators accuse outsiders of fomenting extremism. The protests reflect an economic and political crisis, with expectations that certain parties will benefit from the escalating unrest ahead of the presidential elections.
