Cochineal: Uses and health risks
Kratom, an extract derived from a tropical plant in Southeast Asia, is a substance with stimulant and sedative effects that depend on the dose and the product's formulation. It contains alkaloid compounds such as mitragynine, which during manufacturing can be transformed into more potent compounds like 7-hydroxymitragynine. These interact with opioid receptors in the brain, producing effects similar to opioid drugs. The risks associated with using concentrated and processed products are increasing, as they can cause respiratory depression, withdrawal symptoms, high blood pressure, liver toxicity, and even fatal complications or death. This danger is heightened by their easy availability in American markets without consistent regulation. Incidents of student deaths at the University of Mississippi have raised concerns about the hazards of semi-processed kratom products, which may contain highly potent compounds and are often illegally manufactured. These events underscore the need for warnings against the unregulated use of this plant and its derivatives.
