Mauritania detains 17 in extortion ring
The Mauritanian government announced the arrest of 17 individuals during a large-scale security campaign targeting a network accused of committing "cyber extortion" crimes through spreading false news and defaming officials and businessmen, most of whom reside abroad. The Minister of Culture and Communication confirmed that those detained are in good condition and that investigations concern cases of financial corruption and moral degradation, noting the difficulty in revealing details about the amounts and accounts linked to these cases. This announcement coincided with reports of bank accounts being frozen, containing more than 1.5 billion ouguiyas (approximately 3.9 million dollars). He explained that the goal of dismantling the network is to combat abuse and protect rights and security, while respecting the rights of those detained. However, local politicians criticized the actions, considering them not fully legally grounded.
