Washington Deports Migrants Abroad
The American authorities have deported over 500 migrants to African countries, some of which have no connection to them, in removal operations that spark legal and humanitarian controversy. A Human Rights Watch report highlights that the migrants' hands and feet were bound with chains during the journeys, and then they were repatriated to countries such as Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, and South Sudan, despite fears they could face torture or persecution. U.S. officials are using deportation policies to intimidate migrants and push them to leave the United States, disregarding their legal rights, which has drawn international criticism and resulted in many living in harsh conditions or facing return to their countries of origin—nations they fled out of fear for their lives. The U.S. Supreme Court will examine the legality of these policies in December.
