Giant turtles dominate Aldabra Island
A recent survey on Aldabra Island in Seychelles shows that the population of Aldabra giant tortoises, once on the brink of extinction, now exceeds the island’s approximate 122,000 residents. It is estimated that around 180,000 turtles live in their natural habitat, marking a record high that surpasses previous figures of fewer than a thousand turtles in the 1990s. Conservation efforts, including classifying the island as a protected area and continuous monitoring for over five years, have contributed to the increase in turtle numbers, despite threats from climate change that could impact their habitats in the future. Aldabra Island is one of only two places in the world where these turtles live in the wild, and it is considered a successful model for the conservation of endangered species.
