Veil Sparks Tensions Between Turkey and Azerbaijan
The dispute between Turkey and Azerbaijan over restrictions on the hijab in Azerbaijani schools is intensifying tensions between the two countries, especially after the Azerbaijani government reversed a decision that limited the wearing of the hijab, considering it a religious requirement. Turkey warns that Azerbaijani criticisms could negatively affect their relations, amid criticism from Islamic circles in Turkey of Baku's relations with Israel and the export of oil to them—particularly through a pipeline that sends a significant portion of the oil to Israel. The disagreement goes beyond the issue of the hijab to encompass political, religious, and regional ties, with relations deteriorating over political and security issues. There are warnings that this escalation could impact the strategic alliance between the two nations.
