Will Saydnaya restore its tourism appeal
The Syrian city of Saidnaya is striving to restore its reputation as a religious and historical site, distancing itself from its association with the Saidnaya military prison, which became a symbol of severe violations during the previous regime's rule. Following a significant decline in tourism since 2011, the city has gradually begun to attract visitors again, especially during religious celebrations such as the Feast of Our Lady of Saidnaya. Before the war, the city welcomed over 100,000 visitors and has been working on reopening additional tourist facilities. The city is distinguished by a centuries-old religious heritage, including the Monastery of Our Lady of Saidnaya, along with several other churches and monasteries. It is now developing cultural and historical tourism that links religious sites with various tourism amenities. Nevertheless, the image of the prison still impacts the city's reputation and contributes to a decline in tourism, as it remains part of its cultural and urban legacy and a painful memory in Syrian consciousness. Overcoming this requires efforts to promote a positive image and enhance tourism services.
