Ex-Shin Bet chief sues Netanyahu over October 7 attack
Former Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar filed a defamation lawsuit against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, accusing him of spreading false claims regarding his performance prior to Hamas's attack on October 7, 2023. Bar explained that he had repeatedly warned Netanyahu about declining deterrence and the potential for a broad escalation, and that the Shin Bet had recommended taking offensive actions against Hamas leaders—recommendations that were not implemented. He also confirmed that security agencies had issued a four-hour warning before the attack about indicators of possible offensive activity along Gaza's border. However, he stated that Netanyahu did not contact him directly, despite having his direct phone number. Bar called for the release of intelligence documents and assessments related to the warnings, arguing that the absence of an official investigation committee made it necessary to resort to the judiciary to uncover the truth. Netanyahu, in turn, attacked Bar, accusing him of failing to initiate contact, ignoring warnings, and thereby contributing to the death of numerous victims.
