Eastern Libya has executed 31 people since August
Human Rights Watch has confirmed that forces loyal to Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar in eastern Libya have executed at least 31 individuals since late August 2023. These executions followed unfair military trials lacking standards of justice. These are the first publicly announced executions in Libya since 2010, with more than 50 other people currently detained in Qurnadah Prison and at imminent risk of execution. These violations raise serious concerns about the recurrence of extrajudicial killings, amid the continued legality of the death penalty in Libya, which has not carried out any executions for 15 years prior to these cases. Reports indicate that the executions were carried out without prior notice to the families, and that the authorities refused to return the bodies, highlighting serious human rights violations within the prisons and detention centers controlled by Haftar’s forces.
