Dahaba Crisis Sparks New Border Tensions
The article addresses the escalation of the crisis involving illegal gold miners, known as "Dahaba," along the Egypt-Sudan border. The Egyptian armed forces have launched widespread security operations, in cooperation with the police, to confront illegal mining activities in the eastern desert and Jabal Al-Aqadat mountains at the border. Experts have explained that the "Dahaba" operate within unofficial financing networks, employing both primitive and advanced tools and techniques to illegally extract gold. This poses a threat to mineral resources and harms the geological environment of the mountainous regions. The Egyptian authorities affirm that their operations do not target beyond their borders, and that activities within Egyptian territory aim to protect national resources from smuggling and encroachment. Coordination between Egyptian and Sudanese authorities continues to ensure security and stability.
