Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that he had a phone call with Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharae during the events in Sweida in July 2025, which saw fierce clashes between the Druze and Bedouin militants, resulting in over two thousand deaths, including 789 Druze. Netanyahu confirmed that the brief and stern conversation helped stop what he described as a massacre, and he pledged to protect the Druze community in Syria and work toward the return of displaced persons. He also indicated that Israel has carried out military operations in Syria, including the destruction of the Ministry of Defense in Damascus and targeting the presidential palace complex, aiming to support the Druze and address security threats in the region.
