Syria Deception Map Overview
The article focused on the misinformation campaign surrounding the wildfires in the Syrian coast during summer 2025. The campaign spread rapidly and widely across multiple platforms. Investigations indicate that these campaigns were pre-organized on the Telegram app, where planning and coordination took place before the content was disseminated on Facebook and X (Twitter), with automated accounts amplifying the messages sourced from external origins. The report also shows that Facebook was used to spread content within Syria, which was then redistributed via WhatsApp and its closed groups, making it more difficult to track and correct false information. The study pointed out that verification and fact-checking tools primarily rely on easier-to-monitor platforms like X, while the locations where campaigns and posts are organized tend to be less supervised, hindering effective countering of misinformation. The article concludes that disinformation strategies are continually evolving, and that corrections must follow the same channels targeted by these campaigns to ensure they effectively reach the intended audience.
