Meloni urges peace talks, supports Ukraine
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni emphasizes her commitment to supporting Ukraine and continuing pressure on Russia, asserting that halting military aid to Kyiv will not bring peace but will lead to the European Union's occupation. She opposes a U.S. approach to lift sanctions on Russian diesel to ease economic pressure on Moscow. Meloni pointed out that ongoing military support for Ukraine is necessary to push Moscow toward serious negotiations, and she called for European unity to achieve this, warning that Europe's division gives Moscow a free gift. Meloni's stance comes amid resistance within the Italian right, which is calling for an end to Ukraine's armament, and opposition from the wider opposition parties demanding European rearmament. The rising popularity of the FdI party reflects a divergence in foreign policy regarding support for Ukraine.
