Iran Names Mehrdad Akhlakhi Defense Minister
Mehrdad Akhlai officially became Iran's Minister of Defense following the Majles' vote in favor of his appointment, succeeding the former official Naser Zadeh, who was killed at the beginning of the war launched by the United States and Israel on February 28. Akhlai, considered a seasoned figure in the defense sector with 42 years of experience, faces a significant responsibility during a sensitive period that demands a precise understanding of the regional environment and the identification of potential scenarios. Although he does not hold a military rank, he has headed the Iranian Defense Industries Organization since 2013. The United Nations imposed sanctions on him in 2007 due to his alleged involvement in activities related to Iran's nuclear program and ballistic missile activities.
