Israeli justification for settler attacks sparks Europe
The West Bank has witnessed a rise in assaults by settlers, with diplomats from France, Belgium, and Poland subjected to violent attacks while they were there, especially during the olive harvest season. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barré condemned the attack, calling for accountability and the arrest of those responsible. Israel stated that an investigation into the incident would be opened, noting that the lack of prior coordination with the military contributed to the weakened security. Other European countries, such as Belgium and New Zealand, expressed concern over the recurrence of these attacks and called for firm measures by Israel. There are accusations that Israel is adopting policies that support settlement expansion and control over settlers' practices, which endangers diplomatic and consular officials and constitutes a clear violation of international obligations to protect them.
