Alberta voters oppose independence
Albertan voters, in the province rich in oil in Canada, rejected the proposal that would have paved the way for a referendum on secession, with about 76% voting against independence and 23% expressing a desire to begin the process of separation. The results were a victory for Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who is committed to maintaining national unity amid trade tensions and threats from the United States to annex Canadian lands. The total number of votes cast, including early voting, exceeded 1.35 million, representing approximately 43% of eligible voters.
