Greece faces protests over inflation and education
Greece has seen widespread protests over the rising cost of living, especially due to high housing and education expenses. Students and teachers are demanding free and public education. The demonstrations point to a serious shortage of teachers, totaling 15,000, along with calls to increase funding for the education sector, which allocated only 3.3% of the GDP in 2023 compared to 4.7% in the European Union. The protests included umbrellas in front of Parliament and gatherings in Athens and Thessaloniki. These protests mirror similar movements in France, with demands for better wages and increased support for education. The Greek government is seeking to prevent a recurrence of scenes of violence and social unrest, emphasizing that it will not return to the era of the financial crisis marked by austerity measures.
