Russia frees American detainee Hubbard
Russian President Vladimir Putin announced today the release of American prisoner Steven Hoppard, who has been detained in Russia since 2022. He had been serving a sentence of approximately seven years on charges of "fighting as a mercenary" for Ukraine, a charge he denies. He has been released and is known as a retired English teacher from Michigan, who was held in Izium in eastern Ukraine before being convicted. This release followed a request from U.S. President Donald Trump. According to a U.S. security official, this event comes after meetings between Putin and Zelensky and is considered a step to enhance mutual understanding between the two countries.
