Egypt Opposes Libya Turkey Maritime Pact
Egypt firmly rejected the Libyan Parliament's ratification of the memorandum of understanding signed between the Government of National Accord in Libya and Turkey in 2019, which delineates maritime jurisdiction areas in the Mediterranean Sea. Egypt confirmed that this memorandum is legally invalid and conflicts with international law, particularly the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea of 1982. It stated that ratifying it has no legal effect for Egypt. Additionally, Egypt expressed its discontent with the Libyan Parliament’s recognition of the memorandum, reaffirming its right to protect its sovereign maritime rights. Egypt considers that the memorandum directly侵犯s its rights in its economic zone and continental shelf.
