Australia to sue Facebook and TikTok over youth accounts
The Australian government announced that it is preparing to take legal action against Facebook and TikTok for failing to comply with a law that prohibits children under the age of 16 from using these platforms, despite previous investigations revealing that most minors have been able to maintain or create accounts despite the law. The law aims to protect children from harmful content by enforcing age verification procedures, but weak verification mechanisms have led to widespread criticism. Australia has also increased fines for violators to 109.2 million Australian dollars and granted stronger powers to investigators to gather evidence. The government emphasized that it will not back down from enforcing the law and holding violating companies accountable.
