Starlink restrictions hinder Ukrainian drones
Elon Musk imposed restrictions on the connection speed in the military version of the Starlink network, which disrupted Ukrainian military operations, especially concerning attack and defensive drones that rely on satellite communication. These restrictions began on October 14 without prior notice, leading to a reduced ability of the drones to operate efficiently, making their operations more vulnerable to detection and interception by Russian forces. Musk discussed the issue with Trump and officials in his administration before implementing the restrictions, but American officials confirmed that Musk acted on his own, and the U.S. government did not issue any directives to do so. The crisis highlighted Ukraine's reliance on a private communication network, and how a technical decision by a private company can directly impact the capabilities of forces on the battlefield, amidst increasing disagreements between Kyiv and the Trump administration over managing the war with Russia.
