Egypt reiterates rejection of Libya Turkey maritime deal
Egypt has reaffirmed its firm rejection of the Memorandum of Understanding signed between Libya and Turkey in 2019 regarding the delimitation of maritime boundaries between the two countries, considering that ratifying it will have no legal effects on Egypt. During his meeting with his Turkish counterpart in Istanbul, Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry emphasized the necessity of respecting the principles of international maritime law and the United Nations Convention of 1982, especially regarding the Exclusive Economic Zones and the continental shelf. This stance comes within the framework of an longstanding dispute over maritime areas and drilling rights in the Eastern Mediterranean, with Egypt supporting Libya's unity, sovereignty, and stability.
