US Warns on Doomsday Arms
The U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency has warned that Russia is developing a nuclear system designed to be launched into space and detonated in Earth’s orbit. Media reports have described it as a “doomsday weapon.” An explosion could disable thousands of satellites through an electromagnetic pulse and radiation that may persist for years, threatening communications, navigation, weather services and more. The report did not explain how the weapon would be delivered into space. Deploying nuclear weapons in orbit would violate the 1967 Outer Space Treaty.
