Ebola progress with new vaccines
Ebola virus is experiencing a severe outbreak in Ituri Province in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, with hundreds of suspected cases and dozens of fatalities. Scientific efforts are ongoing to develop more effective vaccines and treatments; currently, two vaccines are in development—one from Merck, which has an efficacy of around 80%, and another from AstraZeneca in collaboration with the Indian Serum Institute, targeting the new Bundibugyo strain associated with the current outbreak. The focus is on containing the spread through testing, isolation, and quarantine measures, especially given the complications caused by displacement and conflicts in the region.
