Scientists have, for the first time, successfully designed viruses using artificial intelligence. AI models were utilized to create genomes of bacterial phages capable of eliminating Escherichia coli bacteria resistant to natural phages. The research was led by Dr. Bryan He from Stanford University, who used two models named Evo1 and Evo2, trained on genetic data from approximately two million bacterial phages. Out of thousands of possible designs, only 16 viruses proved to be functional, with some capable of targeting two different bacterial strains.
