The UN Special Coordinator in Lebanon, Jean Arnaud, announced that the United Nations is committed to supporting the Lebanese state and its local authorities in the south and Nabatieh, despite ongoing challenges and conflicts in the region. During his visit to both governorates, he emphasized the importance of the presence of international forces in the south to maintain security and provide humanitarian assistance, and called on the international community to ensure UNIFIL’s continued presence and to prevent any security vacuum after its withdrawal. He underscored that the decision to renew the mission is not solely at the discretion of the Secretary-General but also depends on the Security Council member states. He expressed the UN’s unwavering support for Lebanon’s institutions and the residents of the south and Nabatieh amid difficult circumstances.
