Ethiopia questions Egypt’s opposition to Renaissance Dam

The article discussed Ethiopia's official commencement of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam on the Nile River, which has sparked widespread controversy due to Egypt and Sudan's concerns that the dam threatens their water shares. The Ethiopian Minister of Water affirmed that the dam is being constructed under a 2015 framework agreement and rejects the necessity of Ethiopia's approval for upstream water projects. Egypt considers the dam a breach of historic agreements and a threat to its water resources, as it relies on the Nile for 90% of its water supply, and fears reduced water flows during drought periods. Relations among the three countries have become strained due to Ethiopia's continued construction and operation of the dam, despite Egypt and Sudan’s objections and their legal claims for a binding agreement. International calls for negotiations to resolve the dispute have been ongoing.
