American Cities Compete for Cuban Sandwich Title

The article discusses the debate between the cities of Tampa and Miami in Florida over who originated the famous Cuban sandwich, providing an overview of its history and evolution in each city. Research indicates that the sandwich originated in Cuba, where it appeared in its traditional form in the late 19th century, then developed further in Tampa due to Cuban migration, cigar-making traditions, and baking techniques, leading to the version known today, which features crispy bread and various types of meats. In Miami, the sandwich gained prominence following a larger wave of Cuban immigration starting in 1959, resulting in different variations, such as the addition of salami and the use of a flakier bread. The bread itself—particularly its crust and texture—is the most significant factor in the differences between these versions. As the sandwich has become globally popular, modern adaptations have emerged, including additions like kimchi. Ultimately, although Cuba itself does not have the American-style version, strong feelings persist about the "authentic" way to prepare it, and the rivalry between the two cities continues to today.
